Today, the common diatribe is “wood chip is all the same and leaches toxins into the soil killing or harming the plants or environment“
The truth as verified by Dr Linda Chalker-Scott PHD.of Puyallup Washington AG Extension is that most chip comes from the tree, not from third party grinders full of downed wood stock piles that have been up to sordid auctions. The majority of chipped wood for mulch is a by product of the sawmill and avoids contact with “used wood stockpiles.

After a long term study she found that pheromone activities in woods/barks of Juniperus, Thuja, Pine and other woods such as walnut are active pest control agents and assist in eliminating or repelling ants, termites and roaches until the pheromone exhausts itself, usually within a month or two.

Dr. Linda Chalker-Scott affirms the need for avoiding smothering the plants by over layering with mulch or not including enough nitrogen or food sources to keep the plants immune healthy and growing!

What ever you use, adding pheromonal essences to your wood mulches will further discourage insect invasion and with care increase your gardening success. Click here for abstract
